about jhai

Jhai’s musical journey is nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, she has always been musically gifted. From a young age, she sang, performed, and played a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, and flute. But what truly sets Jhai apart is her musical lineage.

Fontella Bass, her grandmother, was a two-time Grammy Nominee and is best known for her 1965 hit classic “Rescue Me.” Jhai’s grandfather, Lester Bowie, was a renowned jazz trumpeter who collaborated with artists like David Bowie, Digable Planets, and Fela Kuti. Music runs deep in her family, and it’s no surprise that Jhai inherited this passion.

At just 11 years old, Jhai wowed audiences by performing for four major record labels as part of the kid band “No Broccoli.” These labels included Def Jam, Sony, Atlantic, and Interscope. Her talent continued to shine when, at 14, she appeared on The Today Show’s kid edition of “The Voice,” sharing the stage with her younger sister.

Now, at 27, Jhai remains committed to her musical legacy. She’s headlined legendary venues such as Eddie’s Attic, City Winery Atlanta, The Sheldon and The National Blues Museum. She’s passionate about honing her technical skills, expanding her theoretical knowledge, and achieving new levels of success. Whether she’s producing, writing her own records or pursuing her dreams, Jhai’s love for music continues to drive her forward.
